Acting Like It’s the End of the World

You might be aware that there was a pretty big election yesterday. I half-expect Facebook and Twitter to synchronously crash and burn on the Information Superhighway due to the indefatigable deluge of celebratory and somber statuses and tweets (It must be poetry when one can express his or her inextinguishable excitement or sudden onset of clinical depression in 140 characters, right?).

When I Googled the simple phrase, “Election Results” at 5 a.m. this morning and stared vacuously at my iPhone screen, I surprisingly had no reaction. I didn’t even ask Siri if the whole country had lost its red, white, and blue marbles (can you guess who I voted for?). I went to bed without anxiety, content not to know the election’s outcome before slipping into sweet, soft, apolitical slumber. I awoke after a restful night to learn of our nation’s decision with a strange sense of peace and calm, unconnected to my pre-caffeinated early morning state, mind you.

My mom and I chatted on the phone today and both confessed to having sought peace and encouragement regarding this election from optimistic, well-educated, experienced pollsters and Fox News contributors (now you really have no question about which candidate I voted for!). Rather than hanging onto the honeyed words of political analysts and news anchors who possess mere “talking head knowledge” (pardon the pun) regarding the candidates, the effectiveness of their campaigns, the tenacity of their constituents, etc., we should have placed our trust and received our hope from the One who knows the end from the beginning, the One who ultimately controls the course of world events and sets kings on their thrones (Daniel 2:21).

It occurred to me that the phrase, “It’s not the end of the world!,” often exclaimed by a friend or relative after we’ve  overreacted to an unfavorable situation,  such as spilling coffee on ourselves in the car or mismatching our socks, may go the way of VHS tapes and Motorola Razrs. As a Christian who studies and wholeheartedly believes in biblical prophecies, I know that this world will not endure forever, at least not in its post-Edenic, sin-sick state.

It would take a book or two to describe what I believe will transpire between now and the time Christ returns and renovates this planet with His perfect peace, unconquerable kingdom, and God-designed government, and obviously none of my eschatological beliefs and opinions can be proven as facts. But what is a fact is that Christ will return and that He commands us to be ready!

“The Son of Man’s Arrival will be like that: Two men will be working in the field—one will be taken, one left behind; two women will be grinding at the mill—one will be taken, one left behind. So stay awake, alert. You have no idea what day your Master will show up. But you do know this: You know that if the homeowner had known what time of night the burglar would arrive, he would have been there with his dogs to prevent the break-in. Be vigilant just like that. You have no idea when the Son of Man is going to show up.” –Matthew 24:39-44 (MSG)

I received an e-letter from a local pastor here in San Antonio titled, “Post-Election Thoughts.” I especially appreciated this statement: … my ability to bring God glory cannot be hindered by presidents and policies; only by my disobedience to the call of Christ.”

No matter what the future holds, we must remember and rely on Who holds the future. I pray that my brothers and sisters and I will keep our hands working, feet going, and eyes looking…all for Him.

Stay fit, stay faithful ~<3 Diana
