What Turns Angels Into Devils?

Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.” -1 Corinthians 1:31, NLT

The wisest man to ever live, King Solomon, wrote that pride leads to destruction.[1] This principle is illustrated multiple times in the Bible through an array of sinful folks like you and me, but perhaps the most famous example is that of Lucifer’s fall from Heaven. A beautiful archangel of music and worship, Lucifer – whose name means “Son of the Morning” – became puffed up with pride, believing he deserved more than his prominent position on God’s holy mountain. He wanted to become like God…

Lucifer’s beauty, wisdom, and authority in Heaven’s angelic hierarchy got to his head and blackened his heart. No longer were these attributes gifts from God for which to be thankful, but tools stolen from God with which to carve his own idol.  A cosmic rebellion ensued, resulting in Lucifer’s eviction from Heaven, along with one-third[2] of the angels who, like Adam and Eve, likely fell for his silver-tongued lie: “You, too, can be like the Most High.”[3]

pride humility

We have all been given special gifts and abilities that are unique to us. Maybe you’re a wonderful singer or an artist. Maybe you have an astronomically high I.Q. Maybe you’re gifted physically with amazing strength or striking beauty. Maybe you have a great deal of material wealth and possessions. Whatever gifts you have, don’t let them become your identity and primary source of happiness. Don’t let them fill you with selfish ambition.

Remember, nothing you have on Earth will follow you into Heaven. The beauty or strength you enjoy now is fading away even as I type. All that remains forever is your soul, the souls of others whose lives you’ve touched in one way or another, and the treasures you’re storing up for yourself in Heaven through the deeds you do for the Lord.[4]

Today, let your gifts glow with God’s goodness. Let them move you to worship as you thank God for the blessings that bring aid and encouragement to others, the abilities that enable you to provide for your family, inspire your friends, and creatively bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to a hurting world.
